Understanding Safety Schemes in Procurement and the associated benefits

CHAS (The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) is a SSIP (Safety Schemes In Procurement ) pre-approval scheme, which allows contractors across the UK, to demonstrate to potential clients that they meet the required health and safety standards and removed the need to demonstrate the same compliance in every tender submission. Working with Pentagon Assurance to achieve the standard, you can be sure that your business is fully compliant and supports efficient supply chain management systems as we’re also SSIP accredited auditors.

Being a SSIP accredited contractor with schemes such as CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, Avetta, Achilles and others is recognised within industry, it shows potential buyers that you adhere to the highest standards of safety, it gives them peace of mind that when it comes to the various health and safety laws they are in the right hands.

Why work with Pentagon Assurance?

We work with you to make it as simple as possible to gain accreditation. We can identify any gaps that may exist within your business systems and processes and help to bridge these gaps so that you can achieve compliance in all areas of risk management.  We will be there to support you through the accreditation journey from start to finish.

What are the benefits?

There are many benefits in being accredited, you will see improved efficiencies in the pre-qualification process and become prequalified without having to spend large amounts of time or money.  CHAS accreditation streamlines the pre-qualification experience with simple pre-qualification questionnaires that assess compliance and minimise repetition on renewal.
Once you’ve achieved compliance and gained accreditation, it becomes easier to grow your business.  Your business profile will be listed on the Member Schemes website which and will display your compliance, trades and the locations in which you operate. Clients can access your full business profile via the client portal and contact you with relevant opportunities.

We recently helped local business, AR Power Ltd to achieve CHAS accreditation to PAS 91 as a principal contractor in a move to support their strategic growth plans.  We took the hard work out of completing the application and prepared supporting documents to ensure compliance to the latest legislation meaning that the business was immediately pre-approved to work on a wide variety of local council projects.

It is important to understand that any SSIP certificate is deemed to satisfy the others, that gives the supplier the freedom of choice to choose any SSIP member scheme and who can provide them with the best value for their requirements. The supplier should visit the SSIP Member Schemes websites for further information and select based on assessment and registration fees and whether the scheme covers their particular duty holder role i.e. Contractor or Designer. The Assessment undertaken by ALL member schemes covers the SAME threshold standard therefore suppliers and buyers can be confident that all schemes complete an equal H&S Assessment.

SSIP certification with any scheme not only provides reassurance for your clients that you are committed to safeguarding their reputation, it is also a display of your commitment to maintaining standards in areas of Health and Safety, Environmental, Equality and Diversity, Financial and Business Standing.
